Topics to review for A1

  • General engine diagnosis
  • Cylinder heads and valve trains
  • Engine blocks and rotating assemblies
  • Lubrication and cooling systems

A short practice session samples topics; it does not cover every task on the certification exam.

How to study engine repair

Separate mechanical engine condition from fuel and ignition faults. When reviewing a compression or leakage question, explain what the test result establishes and what still needs checking. For lubrication and cooling questions, connect the symptom to the path oil or coolant takes through the engine.

Practice Mode explains each answer as you go. Read the explanation even when you answered correctly, and revisit unfamiliar concepts before another set. A free account saves your scores and topic results. On the home page, you can choose difficulty, session length, or a different mode.

These are independent practice questions, not official ASE questions or a prediction of a passing score. Use ASE’s official test preparation resources to plan your full exam preparation.
